Southern Burlington County NAACP brings law enforcement, community together with forum

The Southern Burlington County NAACP held a law enforcement forum Thursday, Aug. 16, in Moorestown, bringing local authorities together with member of the African-American community and other to discuss subject ranging from use of force, community relations and diversity within their departments, according to the Burlington County Times.

Most of the police chiefs in the area sent a representative to the forum that the streamed live on the local NAACP’s Facebook page. Southern Burlington County NAACP President Crystal Charley told the Times that the goal of the program was to have “an honest, open and sometimes potentially uncomfortable conversation.”

The NAACP branch told the newspaper that the event was part of a series meant to provide outreach to the community. Some of its other events included a candidate forum featuring nine Burlington County residents running for office in June and a fundraiser in July, per the Times.

According to the branch’s Facebook page, the event was moderated by Marcus Sibley, its leadership development specialist. Those attending included the president of the Burlington County Police Chiefs’ Association, the County Prosecutor, and area police chiefs, sergeants, and lieutenants from Cinnaminson Township Police Department, Evesham Township Police (NJ), Lumberton Township Police, Maple Shade Police Station, Medford Township Police Department, Medford Lakes Police Department, Moorestown Police Department, Mount Laurel Police Department, Palmyra Police Department NJ, Riverton Police Department – NJ, and neighboring Riverside Township Police .

In the audience, per SBC NAACP, were retired superior court judge Honorable Marie White Bell, and candidates running for office in Burlington County Schwartz Hopson and Youngkin for Burlington County, NJ, Gillespie & Donnelly for Moorestown Council, and Veasy, Cooper and Hansen.
