Atlantic City NAACP Names Freedom Fund Winners

ATLANTIC CITY – The Atlantic City Chapter of the NAACP will honor six individuals, including New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy with its Freedom Fund awards in April, branch President Kaleem Shabazz announced this week.

Murphy and the other awardees will be recognized at the 47th annual Atlantic City NAACP Freedom Fund Breakfast at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, 1000 Boardwalk on Saturday, April 25.

Former New Jersey Secretary of State, Rev. DeForest “Buster” Soaries Jr., will be the keynote speaker. Soaries, the former chair of the federal Election Assistance Commission, is the senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens in Somerset.

Murphy will receive the branch’s health award. As First Lady, Murphy’s policy initiatives have focused on infant and maternal health, climate change education, and fostering women-owned businesses throughout New Jersey. She has worked across the state to increase access to resources for mothers, children and families.

Matthew J. Doherty, executive director of the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, will receive the NAACP’s government award. Doherty, the former mayor of Belmar, is responsible for creating public-private partnerships and inter-governmental agreements to encourage local growth within Atlantic City’s Tourism District.

Anthony Brower, president of the organization Friends in Action, will receive the community service award. Friends In Action allows members within them the ability to band together for positive public works in the Atlantic City area.

William Hawkes, the owner of the nonprofit Gospel station WEHA-FM, will receive the business awards. WEHA-FM, a two-time Stellar Award Winner that was established in 2003, is dedicated to serving Atlantic City and the surrounding areas playing the best in contemporary urban gospel and inspirational music and programming.

Indra Lyn Owens, the founder and chief executive officer of Princess Inc. will be given the youth award. Owens graduated from Temple University with a degree in communications and master’s in education in school counseling. Princess Inc. cultivate young women, identify their talents, bond with like-minded individuals and pursue life’s purpose with vigor.

Kristina (Johnson) Carr, of the Atlantic City chapter of the national nonprofit Jack & Jill, will receive a special recognition from the NAACP. Jack & Jill has 59 chapters across the country, dedicating their volunteer services to children, through programs and philanthropy.
