SEWELL – The National Coalition of 100 Black Women Southern New Jersey Chapter looks to nudge along the next great African-American woman in the sciences as it hosts the 2020 STEAM Conference Saturday, March 28 at the Rowan College of South Jersey’s Sewell campus from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Rowan College of South Jersey, Sewell is the new name of the former Gloucester County College at Rowan University.

The STEAM conference looks to engage girls grades 7-10 in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts and math. The conference will provide age-appropriate experiences to gain in-depth information from professional African-American women in each area.

The conference happens almost a month after the death of the legendary Katherine Johnson, the African-American female “human computer” who calculated by hand the orbital mechanics of spacecraft for NASA that allow Americans to send astronauts into space. Her historical role was immortalized in the hit 2016 Oscar-nominated movie “Hidden Figures.”

NCBW Southern New Jersey Chapter is non-profit organization committed to gender equity and socioeconomic advancement that drives meaningful change to benefit women and girls. The organization advocates on behalf of Black women and girls to promote leadership development and gender equity in the areas of health, education and economic empowerment.

Gina Burton serves as president of the Southern New Jersey Chapter.

NCBW’s purpose is tofoster principles of equal rights and opportunities, provide the awareness of Black culture, develop the potential of the membership for effective leadership and participation in civic affairs, take action on specific issues of national, and international importance, and cooperate with persons and organizations to achieve mutual goals.
