ATLANTIC CITY – Former Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford, who fought against Mayor Marty Small for the position more than a decade ago, announced Monday he is supporting him in the upcoming Democratic primary next month.

Small’s campaign made the announcement of the two-time mayor’s endorsement in a statement, with Langford calling Small “the better choice” of candidates. Small is running against city employee and Stockton University adjunct professor Pamela Thomas-Fields to fill the remaining term of Frank Gilliam.

“Over the years, Marty has been a tireless worker in this community for our youth,” Langford said. “He has worked his way up the ladder having first served in other elected positions on school board and city council. Unlike the other candidates, Marty has paid his dues and earned his stripes.”

Langford defeated Small for the Democratic Party nomination for mayor in 2009. Langford served as Atlantic City’s mayor from 2002-2006 and from 2008-2014. He served on city council before becoming mayor.

“Let’s not change horses in the middle of the stream,” Langford said.
