VINELAND – South Jersey Congressional candidate Will Cunningham announced this past weekend support from two organizations.

Cunningham is trying to win the Democratic Party primary next month for a chance to face incumbent Rep. Jeff Van Drew in November. Van Drew made national headlines when he won the seat nearly two years ago as a Democrat before switching parties and becoming Republican earlier this year during the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

Cunningham was awarded Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate Distinction. The organization is known around the country for its advocacy work to promote safety regulations. It is the largest grassroots organization of mothers working together to reduce gun violence.

“I could not be more proud to have received their distinction,” Cunningham said in a statement. “As a nation, we must fight to keep guns out of the wrong hands by mandating comprehensive background checks on all gun sales and closing any loopholes that allow for unchecked guns in our communities. We must hold the gun industry and the NRA accountable for the irreparable damage they have caused to our society.”

Cunningham said Van Drew has a 100 percent rating with the National Rifle Association and “his stance on guns endangers public safety and is another irresponsible step of his so-called leadership.”

“It is time our elected leaders take a stand and fight to prevent gun violence. As your Congressman, I promise to never back down in the fight to keep South Jerseyans safe and I will work tirelessly to close all gun loopholes and bring much-needed gun reform to this nation,” he added.

Cunningham was also endorsed by the progressive group Atlantic County Our Revolution.

“In a race beset by machine politics and Super PACs, no amount of platitudes can replace firm policy stances on what matters most,” Mico Lucide, the chair of Atlantic County Our Revolution said in a statement.

Cunningham said being a progressive is “a fight, an understanding of struggle, and a passion for bold policies. I have fought my entire life for vulnerable communities and it is time that our elected leaders work for those unable to fight for themselves. Those closest to the pain must be closest to the power of influencing impactful policy. Atlantic County Our Revolution understands that and I am thrilled to fight alongside them for real progressive change across South Jersey.”

Cunningham, who worked as a chief investigator on the House Oversight Committee, held corporations accountable in the best interest of the public.

“In Congress, I will do the same to help the families and children of New Jersey’s Second Congressional District achieve their dreams just as I, with their help, was able to do not so long ago. Atlantic County Our Revolution recognizes that our campaign is the only voice for true progressivism and equality in this race. Their endorsement serves to validate what we already know. South Jersey needs a change and South Jersey deserves a change.
