BRIGANTINE – Atlantic City councilman Kaleem Shabazz announced Wednesday he is endorsing Amy Kennedy for Congress in New Jersey’s Second District.

Shabazz, who is also the longtime president of the Atlantic City NAACP, had initially endorsed rival Brigid Harrison in December, but now has switched his support to Kennedy, according to a statement from the Kennedy campaign.

“When we needed Amy’s voice in Atlantic City against the change of government, she was there,” Shabazz said. “And she was one of the first to show real leadership in the wake of George Floyd’s murder.

“She raised her voice and stood in solidarity with the Black community here in South Jersey, and she has reached out and spoken with many leaders of our community to engage in meaningful discussions about how we can take action to address systemic racism and injustice.  Now Amy Kennedy needs us to send her to Washington to vote and fight for us,”

Kennedy had earlier won support from the Atlantic City Democratic Committee and Martin Luther King III.

“I am honored to have the endorsement of Kaleem Shabazz,” Kennedy said in a statement. “As an elected official, community leader and activist, Councilman Shabazz has helped lead the fight for equality and justice in Atlantic City and throughout South Jersey.

“The fight against injustice and racism is vital to South Jersey’s future and to the future of our nation. I look forward to continuing to work with Councilman Shabazz and other leaders of the community to fight for a South Jersey where parents are able to send their children out without fear that they will be attacked because of the color of their skin and where a child born in Atlantic City has the same chance of success as anywhere else in our district, Kennedy added.
