“AATCLC had a front-row view to the extraordinary work Will accomplished as a chief investigator on Capitol Hill, Carol McGruder, chair of the AATCLC said in a statement. “His extraordinary efforts lay the foundation and significantly contributed to the ultimate firing of JUUL’s CEO, and the subsequent FDA and White House banning of fruit-flavored e-cigarette pods.

“We could not be more thrilled to see Will become a new, young, voice in the Congressional Black Caucus,” McGruder added.

Cunningham fought to protect children from predatory marketing practices targeting schools and youth during his investigations into the e-cigarette industry.

“I am honored to have AATCLC’s endorsement,” Cunningham said. “True representation matters, and I intend to highlight and remedy health inequities for people of color in my district and beyond. There is more work to do including holding corporations accountable for the decades long predatory marketing of menthol products to black communities and now to our children of all races. Enough is enough.”

The African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council was founded in 2008 with its principal mission is to educate the public about the effects of tobacco on Black American and African Immigrant populations, to stop the tobacco industry’s predatory marketing tactics, and to regulate the sale of flavored tobacco products, including menthol.

The Progressive Democrats of New Jersey called Cunningham “a remarkable leader with an incredible story.” The group is a coalition of organizations working to uphold the interests of the working-class in New Jersey.

“[Cunningham] grew up as a true son of the working class, with his mother living paycheck to paycheck, and at one point he was even homeless,” the group said in a statement. “He conquered the adversity, made his way into Brown, and has dedicated his life to public service and the betterment of others ever since.

“He is a truly empathetic and caring human being who has a clear intention of serving the people and only the people, which is why PDNJ is proud to announce our endorsement for Will Cunningham in his bid for NJ-2,” the Progressive Democrats said.
