VINELAND – Hidden in the latest campaign fundraising figures released last week is that Brigid Callahan Harrison, the establishment Democrat Party nominee for New Jersey District 2, needed to infuse personal funds to outraise the grassroots campaign of Will Cunningham.

Cunningham, who has been fighting well-funded candidates in Democratic Party primary July 7 for the right to face Republican Jeff Van Drew in November, has raised almost $155,000 in 2020 and $73,529 in the latest quarter.

The Ivy League graduate and former Congressional investigator said in a statement that his campaign would have raised nearly $100,000 more than Harrison if she hadn’t put in $160,000 of her own money into the raise.

“I am emboldened by these fundraising numbers,” Cunningham said in the statement. “They serve to prove that South Jersey is rejecting the overt privilege and wealth attempting to buy this seat in favor of true grassroots progressivism.

“I intimately understand the struggles of this district in a way my wealthy opponents never can, and the people of South Jersey are ready for a representative who knows their pain because he lived it. Their story is my story,” Cunningham added.

Amy Kennedy, the wife of former U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy, led all candidates in fundraising for the quarter.

The winner of the Democratic primary will need the cash against Van Drew in a campaign that will assuredly be played out on the national stage after he switched parties in January during President Donald Trump’s impeaching in the U.S. House of Representatives. Trump has already traveled to South Jersey to campaign for Van Drew.

“I am the most experienced and qualified candidate in this race,” Cunningham said. “I have a proven track record in Congress because I got results for the American people as a chief investigator on the House Oversight Committee. This election is a watershed moment for South Jersey. We cannot let privilege and wealth determine who is best fit to advocate for and present our collective struggle in the halls of Congress.”

Cunningham in the meantime released a new campaign video highlighting his own experience in the hands of police as a youth in his home Cumberland County. The video comes as protest swirl around the country over police brutality over the death of George Floyd and others.
