SJ’s Rachel Green Plays Role in Biden/Harris Winning Campaign

DEPTFORD TOWNSHIP — Rachel Green has never been shy about her political activism, working as an Obama/Biden deputy field director 2008 and an Obama/Biden election director 2012, but wanted to step up her involvement this year.
Green, a 2020 delegate candidate for Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, got involved in the impressive digital effort to elect the president-elect as co-founder of co-state director of the Jersey Girls 4 Joe/Kamala and Women for Biden/Harris New Jersey. She also served as co-chair of Women of Color Coalition for Biden/Harris Digital.
In a national election where literally every vote counted, Biden defeated President Donald Trump handily in New Jersey and edged him in the neighboring critical battleground state of Pennsylvania. The election also led to the historic election of the first woman vice president and first woman of color elected nationally Kamala Harris, the former California senator.
“It’s one of those things we’ve worked so far,” Green told Front Runner New Jersey. “I know, it was for me hoping that this was finally the time not only to see that glass ceiling be shattered, but we finally just knock it down forever.”
Green, a Deptford Township native, is the civil rights director for the progressive nonprofit Action Together New Jersey. In 2017, she made her own history by becoming the first African-American woman to serve as president on the Deptford Township Board of Education.
“It was quite exhilarating to be part of this,” Green said. “This is our pivotal civil rights movement in history, so it was really nice to be a part of a coalition of diverse women coming together, volunteering, grassroots on the ground, in such a revolutionary organized fashion to be able to work together and get out the vote for the campaign.”
Green said her involvement came about in a phone call to National Women’s Rights director Krista Smith letting her know her interest in getting involved. There, she was brought together with Haddonfield’s Jessica Drass to for Jersey Girls 4 Joe/Kamala and Women for Biden/Harris New Jersey.
She also served with Anne Shaw as co-director of Women of Color Coalition for Biden/Harris Digital.
JerseyGirls4Joe/Kamala and New Jersey’s Women for Biden/Harris 2020 official grassroots Facebook group for the campaign, It focused on actionable ways to support the Biden online and in the community. The Women of Color Coalition served as a vehicle to energize women of color for the campaign.
“[Smith] connects me with Jessica and the next thing you know Jersey Girls got started,” Green said. “It kind of took off from there. Ultimately, we connected with other women around the nation, with women, for Biden/Harris. We became part of a bigger national group that came together to get work done throughout the nation.”
Green said the groups participated in a wide-range of activities during the campaign to benefit the Biden/Harris ticket, from phone banking, promoting book clubs and roundtable discussions, and other events advocating the need to vote.
“We also did some knocking on doors canvassing, text messaging, you know, individually sending postcards out to their friends and family encouraging them to vote,” Green said.
Green said being involved in such a historically-meaningful race will be something that will always stay with here.
“I definitely continue to push for women’s issues,” Green said. “The campaign is supporting it, definitely. Me and my cohorts will definitely be supporting legislation and any candidate that’s pushing collectively for women’s issues and what’s best for our country.
“I’m just so thrilled and honored to have been a part of this great history and to have left this legacy not only for my daughter, but the future generations that will be coming behind us,” Green added.
