Local small business owner and community activist Marcus Sibley was officially installed as president of the Southern Burlington County Chapter of the NAACP via Zoom Saturday.

Sibley said the theme of the chapter under his leadership will be “Black Joy…Because We Deserve To Smile.” He takes over the chapter leadership from his wife Crystal Charley-Sibley, who serves as second vice president of the New Jersey NAACP State Conference.

“We will not be activists,” said Sibley, a member of the Burlington County Minority and Equality Rights Task Force, in his comments to attendees. “We will be lobbyists. Black people will be our special interest group.”

He said to members and guests attending the installation that in the struggle for racial justice, it was fine to reach out and ask for help, but they should not be afraid to say “what help should look like.”

Moorestown Mayor Nicole Gillespie, Willingboro Mayor Dr. Tiffani Worthy and Burlington County Commission Director Felicia Hopson administered the Oath of Office for the officers and committee members.

In the reorganization of SBC-NAACP leadership, Charley-Sibley will serve as chair of the Women In NAACP (WIN) committee. Quinton Law, who was installed as a councilman for Moorestown Township, received the oath from Gillespie as the branch’s education chair.

Along with Sibley, other officers and committee members installed included: Tyrus Ballard, first vice president; Jasmine Hardy, second vice president; Cynthia L. Davis, third vice president; Miguel Williams, secretary; Linda Goodman, treasurer; J.W. Piercy III, community coordination chair; Boaz Matlack, criminal justice chair; Ashley Smith, health chair; Miguel Williams, housing chair; Dr. April M. Piercy, membership chair; Tyrus Ballard, political action chair; Bishop T.R. Lyles, religious affairs chair; and Patrice Farquharson, youth adult chair.

More than 70 people attended the zoom installation, including Richard Smith, president of the New Jersey State NAACP Conference;  Dr. Marguerite Hall, president of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women Southern New Jersey Chapter; Willingboro NAACP president Samantha Whitfield, who is also a Willingboro councilwoman; Fatima Heyward, president of the New Jersey Young Democrats, and Alexander Bland, co-president of the Cape May-Cumberland County Young Democrats.
