WHITESBORO — The Cape May County branch of the NAACP is asking questions on how a local chapter of a militia group connected with the Jan. 6 invasion of the U.S. Capitol Building found a home at Cape May Court House.

In a statement released Thursday (Jan. 28), the executive board of the CMC NAACP asked about who approved the Oath Keepers to start meeting at the Old Historic Court House Building at Cape May Court House.

According to media reports, the Oath Keepers had been meeting at the facility since 2014. Since the attack on the Capitol, Cape May County Commissioner Gerald Thornton announced they would no longer have their meetings there.

“[The] Cape May County NAACP wants to know why this group was permitted to occupy county facilities and who authorized them,” said a statement from the civil rights organization. “The events we watched unfold on January 6, at our nation’s Capitol were horrific displays of violence and disrespect for law and civility.

“As the events unfolded, names of groups who were allegedly responsible for the day’s events were being named. One such organization was the Oath Keepers, a militia group with a chapter in Cape May County,” the branch said.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the New Jersey Department of Homeland Security and Preparedness classified the Oath Keepers and Three Percenters as extremist militia groups “actively recruiting in New Jersey” since 2012, yet the group continued to use county-owned facilities in Cape May County.

Several of its members nationwide, including at least one in New Jersey, have been arrested in connection with the Capitol Building insurrection.
