ATLANTIC COUNTY — Former Democratic Atlantic County Commissioner Ashley Bennett announced Thursday her endorsement of Mico Lucide for county clerk, to replace current clerk Edward P. McGettigan.

Bennett, who captured her District 3 seat in 2018 in a campaign that turned national over comments about the national Women’s March, has become a recognized symbol of women’s rights. She served as the lone African-American woman on the commission during her tenure.

“It is rare that we are given an opportunity to elevate diversity and inclusion in our government,” Bennett said in her endorsement statement. “It is even rarer that we have the opportunity to steer the course away from old and tired ways in our government, bringing people access to the political process and civic engagement.

“This year, we have an opportunity to do all of this and more. This is what I was excited to see when Mico Lucide launched his campaign for Atlantic County Clerk. Over the past 3 years, I’ve gotten to know Mico and see how intelligent he is. His passion for voting rights drives him to ensure people from all walks of life can engage in the civic process,” Bennett added.

Bennett said Lucide continues to fight for diversity and inclusion for marginalized communities, despite consistent obstacles and hardship, because it is what Atlantic County needs.

“His story will resonate with people, especially those who feel left out of the political process,” Bennett said. “Mico’s candidacy will energize people and will usher in the next generation of leadership Atlantic County needs. As a person who values providing access to those who often feel that they do not have it and as someone who advocates for fresh perspectives and ideas, it is my honor to endorse Mico Lucide for Atlantic County Clerk.

Lucide is an IT professional and a Stockton University graduate, the first person in his family to graduate from a four-year university.
