ATLANTIC CITY — City of Atlantic City Council Vice President Kaleem Shabazz will lead a vigil in memory of George Floyd at the Courtyard at City Hall, 1301 Bacharach Blvd. at noon on Tuesday, May 25.

The event, “One Year Later: A Community Vigil For George Floyd,” marks the one-year anniversary of Floyd’s death in the custody of Minneapolis Police. The death, which was captured on cell phone video, went viral and led to police brutality and social justice rallies around the world.

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who kneeled on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes while Floyd pleaded for his life, was convicted on three charges last month by a Minneapolis state jury, including second degree murder. He has not been sentenced.

“I am hopeful the public will attend the vigil to remember George Floyd and show their commitment to justice,” said Shabazz, who represents the city’s Third Ward and serves as present of the NAACP of Atlantic City.

The community vigil will include a period of silence for eight minutes and 46 seconds to signify the time that George Floyd was pinned on the ground and died, according to the video taken.

Shabazz said the public is invited and encouraged to attend.
