GLASSBORO — The mentorship program Friday is Tie Day will hold its fifth annual Tie Ceremony and College Decision Day at Rowan University at 5 p.m. on June 13, announced founder Darrell Edmonds.

Edmonds, a longtime youth advocate and Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School Board of Education member, started the program in 2013 to empower young adult males with the skills to improve life outcomes.

It empowers young men through mentoring and teen involvement from grades 8-12. Chapters are found in high schools from Atlantic, Camden and Gloucester counties, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

More than 200 have passed through the program since its inception with a 100% college acceptance rate. About 50 high school students are in the program today.

“[We are celebrating] with our young kings as they receive their custom 2021 ties,” a statement on Friday is Tie Day’s Facebook site about the June 13 ceremony. “Find out where our seniors will be attending college or trade school. This year will feature live music, a food truck and an augmented reality red carpet.”

Edmonds is a former scholarship collegiate athlete, playing football at the University of Delaware. Friday is Tie Day has been recognized throughout the region for his positive involvement in uplifting youth.
