OCEAN CITY — Ocean City High School graduate Nya Gilchrist won the Ocean City Juneteenth Organization scholarship in June, New Jersey Assemblyman Antwan McClellan told Front Runner New Jersey.

Gilchrist, a June graduate of Ocean City High School, will be attending Shippensburg University to play field hockey in the fall.

“I chose Shippensburg because of the university’s strong support staff and resources that are there to help you not just athletically but academically,” Gilchrist said on social media in May.

Ocean City’s field hockey coach Kelsey Burke added: “We are going to miss her leadership, heart and team-first attitude but know she is destined for greatness at Ship.”

In May, Gilchrist won the 100-meter dash at the Cape May County Track and Field Championships and led the team to victory in the 4×100-meter race.

Gilchrist was also an outstanding academic student and was crowned Ocean City High School’s homecoming queen last fall. She won an academic honor with the National Field Hockey Coaches Association as well.

“I’m extremely proud of all of her accomplishments,” Gilchrist’s father Wallace Gilchrist, told Front Runner New Jersey this week. “I’m proud of the way she took on the sport and pushed herself.”

Wallace Gilbert said his daughter is accomplished in American Sign Language and was voted “Ocean City High School female athlete of the year” by her coaches.

“She was able to do these things despite the pandemic,” Wallace Gilchrist said. “I’m extremely proud and blessed to have her as a daughter. She has more of an old school, motherly instinct, but still sociable. For me, it’s hard to put into words how proud I am of her.”

Gilchrist will study early education in college.
