Peru Independence Day Celebrated in South Jersey

ATLANTIC CITY — Peru natives and supporters on Wednesday celebrated Peru Independence Day, celebrating 200 years.
It was the first Peruvian celebration in Atlantic City by organizers.
Peru was first colonized by the Spanish in the 15th century. In 1824, following the decisive victory that came at the Battle of Ayacucho, under the leadership of Simon Bolivar and Jose San Martin, Peru won its independence.
In Atlantic City, there was a Peruvian flag raising, playing of its National Anthem, along with food and music from the Peruvian community. Jose Gabriel Mesones, member of the nonprofit La hermandad de los Milagros, was the main organizer.
The celebration is another sign of the rich, valued and proud diversity within the Latino community in Atlantic County and South Jersey.
