ATLANTIC CITY — After years of working behind the scenes in other campaigns, Stephanie Marshall is running her own campaign seeking a spot as an at-large member of the city council of Atlantic City.

As part of a slate of candidates led by incumbent Mayor Marty Small Sr., Marshall said she believed to time was right to step out of the shadows.

“I was comfortable working behind the scenes for candidates in Atlantic City but it was time for me to step up,” Marshall told Front Runner New Jersey. “I know the issues facing the city and I’m ready to serve.”

Marshall is Atlantic City born and raised with a degree in finance and a minor in African American Studies.

She has close ties to Small, serving as his treasurer during the mayor’s last campaign.

“[I learned that] you often have to make tough decisions, it is a balancing act,” Marshall said. “Finance and budgeting is something that is often misunderstood. This experience and having a degree in business will help me understand the priorities when it comes to the budget.”

If elected, Marshall will be just the second woman on city council, alongside District 2’s Latoya Dunston.

“Women are often playing important roles in the background, it’s time that we step up and have a seat at the table,” Marshall said. “Now that America has its first female vice president, I hope this encourages more women to step up.”

Marshall addressed other issues with Front Runner New Jersey during our interview.

FRNJ: Anything else you would like to add?

Stephanie Marshall: My idol is Harriet Tubman, I have a picture of her on my desk.

I’m a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. It’s expected that I serve my community.

I have served on the Atlantic City Housing Authority board as the Treasurer since 2009.

Purchased my home through a program that provides assistance to residents with low/moderate incomes.
