SEWELL — Considered an authority in women’s health disparity issues, Melissa Fox took the literary journey to examine its root causes, define its longstanding impacts, and propose a healing process in her new book, “No Weapon Formed: An Exploration of the Black Woman’s Experience in America, and How We Can Move Towards Healing Together.”

“No Weapon Formed” uses a powerful combination of historical context, transcribed conversations of real discussions among Black women, and moving personal testimonies to explore not only the current environment which contributes to so many disparities, but the steps that can be taken to help change these outcomes.

“If we look at the path and pattern that have led Black women to this point, it is abundantly clear that the systemic patterns of dehumanization, devaluing and attempts to diminish our person have also created a toxic response that masks survival as strength. We deserve more. We deserve healing.”

Melissa Fox has spent the past 20 years working in mid to large community care organizations to reduce disparities and to support individuals who have been historically and systemically
disenfranchised.

As a board member of the Gloucester County chapter of the NAACP as well as other national and regional organizations which address health disparities, Fox has helped to bring issues such as healthcare inequity, to light in the hopes of achieving mental and physical healing for the Black woman.

“‘No Weapon Formed’ is an amazingly powerful book capturing the journey of Black women, their families, their struggles, their successes and their failures,” said Loretta Winters, the New Jersey chair of Women in the NAACP and president of the Gloucester County NAACP.

“Melissa has articulately described and analyzed the multifaceted and problematic life of Black women living in America. Through her insight, she captured how society hurts us individually and collectively. Not only is this excellent reading but a powerful reference book of understanding,” she added.

For those seeking an easy-to-follow guide to navigating the impacts of the intersectional harms
experienced by Black women in the United States, “No Weapon Formed” is the ideal reference.

The text is also recommended as an impactful book for any self-care reading or discussion group, and can provide the knowledge and the tools to move towards healing together.
