SOMERS POINT — The Atlantic County Democratic Committee announced Sunday it will endorse civil rights attorney Tim Alexander in the U.S. Representative District 2 Democratic primary for a shot to run against Republican Jeff Van Drew in the fall.

The announcement was made at the party’s conference at the Gateway Playhouse in Somers Point.

Alexander announced a year ago he would run to represent the Democrats against Van Drew who made national attention when he switch parties in 2000 in support of former President Donald Trump.

Alexander was picked out of a strong field of candidates that included well-known Egg Harbor PAL leader Hector Tavarez and engineer Carolyn Rush.

“Our party is strong and united heading into 2022,” Atlantic County Democratic Party Chairman Michael Suleiman said in a statement. “We congratulate Tim Alexander on his victory and want to commend Hector Tavarez and Carolyn Rush for their great campaigns.”

Atlantic County is one piece of the puzzle in New Jersey’s largest Congressional district by land size. The district, which is considered “purple” politically after long being one of the few Republican strongholds in the state, covers Salem, Cumberland, Cape May and Atlantic counties and portions of Gloucester, Camden, Burlington and Ocean counties.

It went for Barack Obama twice, but elected Republican representatives. That changed in 2018 when Van Drew won the seat as a moderate Democrat after the retirement of Republican Frank LoBiondo.

But Van Drew switched his party affiliation in early 2000 as Democrats tried to impeach Trump the first time. Van Drew edged Amy Kennedy, the wife of former Democratic Rep. Patrick Kennedy to keep the seat that year.

In other news made at the meeting, the party-endorsed three-term Atlantic County District 1 Commissioner Ernest Coursey for his re-election to the seat in 2022. Coursey is running in the newly redrawn county map, where he will still represent Atlantic City. Coursey is the current chief of staff for Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr.

The county’s Democratic Party also endorsed Habib Rehman for County Commissioner-at-Large, and Jay R. Shah for Commissioner District 4. Rehman is an Atlantic City-based small business owner and lives in Brigantine. Shah works in the banking industry at Wells Fargo and lives in Galloway Township.
