NJ’s Latina Civic Speaks Out Against Supreme Court’s Roe decision

AC JosepH Media
TRENTON — The board members of Latina Civic are extremely disappointed and concerned with the Supreme Court’s official decision to overturn the longstanding precedents of Roe v. Wade. and Planned Parenthood v. Casey.
These two landmark cases should have served as protection of the reproductive rights of all women and especially Latinas. The decision to revoke the Constitutional right to reproductive autonomy has set our country back over 50 years.
Latina Civic firmly believes in the case law set in place by the Roe v. Wade case as fundamental for a young woman’s reproductive freedom. It should be up to each individual to decide if they are ready to start a family, not the government.
A historic decrease in Latina youth pregnancies has drastically increased the number of Latinas who complete high school and enter higher education, hence increasing their economic opportunity and earnings in adult life.
Women must have access to affordable reproductive healthcare services that prioritize the well-being of women and children in our communities.
Now, 13 states are set to outright ban abortions within 30 days since Roe v. Wade has been overturned. Other states will likely reactivate dormant anti-abortion legislation that had previously been blocked by the courts.
Luckily, in New Jersey, the Reproductive Freedom Act has passed into law, allowing for Latinas in the state to have access to safe and legal abortions.
However, this can change at any time, within our state or other like-minded states who have similar legislation in place, as time goes on. We request Congress to codify Roe V. Wade into federal law so every Latina in the United States has this same access.
Latina Civic is unapologetically pro-choice and we will not rest until our country grants that right to all individuals. We invite fellow advocates to become members of Latina Civic and join us in this fight.

We urge Latinas everywhere to register to vote and stand up for the rights of women nationwide. Our collective voice and mobilization will defend Roe V. Wade and support candidates running for legislative positions to our legal right to safe abortion access.
