Dr. Thelma Witherspoon Chosen Vice Chair of Atlantic County Democratic Committee

EGG HARBOR CITYDr. Thelma Witherspoon, a former Atlantic City school board member and ex-Atlantic County Commissioners candidate, was chosen this week to become vice chair of the Atlantic County Democratic Committee this week.

The party said Witherspoon was unanimously chose to fill the spot formerly held by Audrey Miles, who resigned to become deputy superintendent of elections in Atlantic County.

“I’m thankful to the county committee members for putting their faith in me,” Witherspoon said in a statement.

“I’ve been involved in the Atlantic County Democratic Committee since the late 1980s. While much has changed during that time, my passion for helping families in Atlantic County has not. I look forward to working with Chairman Suleiman and the rest of the Executive Committee.”

Michael Suleiman was unanimously re-elected for a two-year term as chairman of the Atlantic County Democratic Committee during the committee reorganization meeting. Suleiman was first elected chair in 2016 at the age of 25, the youngest county chairperson ever elected in New Jersey history.

The Galloway resident was re-elected in 2018 and 2020. At 31, he is still the youngest county chairperson in New Jersey.

“It’s been an honor and privilege to serve as the Chairman of our party,” Suleiman said, “Under our leadership, we’ve doubled-down on fair election districts, outreach to disadvantaged communities, and promoting candidates who want to make Atlantic County affordable again. I look forward to working with our members over the next two years to continue growing our party.”

Others elected or re-elected to their posts were: Secretary Walead Abdrabouh, Treasurer Don “Butch” Burroughs, Assistant Secretary Melissa Goldsborough, Deputy Treasurer Wick Ward, and Sergeants-at-Arms Yolanda Cooper and Creed Pogue.

Witherspoon has a long career in public service, working for the City of Atlantic City for 35 years and serving on the Atlantic City Board of Education. An ordained minister, Witherspoon lives in Hamilton Township and serves on the township’s Historic Preservation Committee.
