ATLANTIC CITY — The NAACP national convention got kicked off to a rousing start Thursday evening during the opening ceremony of the organization’s ACT-SO competition at the Showroom Theater at the Tropicana Atlantic City Hotel and Casino.

ACT-SO stands for Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics, created by the famed late Chicago Sun-Times journalist Vernon Jarrett to recognize and celebrate high school age African Americans in academic competition as opposed to athletics.

In one of the shining examples of the organization’s commitment to you, hundreds of young people annually compete in academic competitions ranging from the performing arts, STEM categories, oratory competitions, etc. They represent winners from dozens of local branch NAACP ACT-SO competitions that were held around the country before the convention.

This year, there is even a culinary competition where the public can purchase ticket to taste creations from young talented African American chefs.

One of the highlights of the evening was a video montage of past medals winners from New Jersey, welcoming the students to the competition.

The students competed in the competition throughout the Tropicana on Friday and Saturday. The awards program will take place at the Atlantic Convention Center, Hall D at 12:30 p.m. Below are some of the images from the ACT-SO Opening Ceremony, taken by Meredith Winner, of Mer-Made Photography.
