ATLANTIC CITYUnite Here Local 54, the top hospitality workers union in South Jersey, said its Political Action Committee endorsed Tim Alexander for Congress on Thursday.

Unite Here just signed a series of contracts with Atlantic City casinos this summer to bring labor peace in the resort town over the next four years. Local 54 represents housekeepers, bartenders, cocktail servers, cooks, bellmen, doormen, and other service jobs in the casinos and hospitality industry of South Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania.

Alexander, a Democrat, is running for the U.S. Representative District 2 seat against Republican incumbent Jeff Van Drew. Local 54 represents more than 10,000 members in the district.

“Tim enjoyed a long and distinguished career in law enforcement, retiring as a detective captain,” Robert McDevitt, chairman of United Here Local 54, said in a statement released by Alexander’s campaign.

“During his career, Tim has always focused on programs that work to develop alternative solutions to problems within communities and to increase trust in law enforcement. Tim will be fighting to bring good union jobs to our district to rebuild our infrastructure, expand rail and bus public transportation, and connect the AC Airport to Atlantic City via light rail.

“He is intent on fighting to protect a Woman’s right to make her own health care decisions in conjunction with her doctor, not with politicians; and to ensure equal pay for equal work,” McDevitt continued.

Alexander said he values the power of unions and will make sure those values are represented with his vote on Congress.

“I have been a union member since my high school job at ShopRite when I joined the union, and I maintain a lifelong membership in the PBA even after retiring from law enforcement,” Alexander said.

“The work that Local 54 does to protect its member’s livelihoods and ensure fair treatment is inspiring, as exemplified by their swift resolution of contract negotiations earlier this summer. When elected to Congress, I will always stand with labor and the working people of this district.”
