LAWNSIDE — The Lawnside Historical Society invites the public to celebrate the 32nd anniversary of the Society at the Peter Mott House Underground Railroad Museum, on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Lovers of Lawnside’s heritage banded together in 1990 to promote the borough’s heritage and save the Mott House from demolition. After more than $400,000 in restoration work, the house was opened as a museum in 2001.

The Rev. Peter Mott and his wife Elizabeth Ann were Black abolitionists who used their home to help freedom seekers escaping from slavery in the 19th century. Special supporters will be recognized during the program.

Dr. Daisy Century will portray Harriet Tubman and vocalist Mary Cross will perform with 2NspireU. Kenneth Scott will reenact the “Last Moments of George Floyd.”

Young historians will share what they learned as participants in the Society’s first summer Underground Railroad Camp. The evening will end with a sundown slideshow of historic Lawnside photographs.

Tickets can be purchased for $10 for adults and $5 for children and senior citizens at Eventbrite.com/e/429474147737. Proceeds benefit the Mott House repair work.

To learn more about the Mott House and its place on the National Register of Historic Places, register for the Society’s Zoom meeting on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. to hear a presentation by historian Gail Greenberg. Go to tinyurl.com/1845MottHouse.

These events are among more than 70 planned during Camden County History Month throughout October. Thirty historic sites and history organizations will be open with special exhibits, reenactments, and guided tours for adults and children.
