ATLANTIC CITY — New Jersey Democratic U.S. Sen. Robert Robert Menendez, one of the few legislators of color in the body, last week endorsed civil rights attorney Tim Alexander for Congress.

Menendez, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, rose from a school board member in Union City to one of the most power legislators in the country. Alexander, who is running against Republican incumbent Jeff Van Drew, is trying to become the first African-American to represent District 2 in Congress, which covers much of South Jersey.

“Tim Alexander has served his community his entire adult life- first as a law enforcement officer, then prosecutor, and currently as a civil rights attorney,” Menendez said in a statement released by Alexander’s office. Tim has devoted his career to supporting families and building safe communities.

“He will be a tireless and effective fighter in Congress. I am so proud to endorse him for this seat- I know Tim will always put the people of the Second District first and won’t shy away from the hard work to get them what they need.”

The endorsement marked a continued consolidation of Democratic support for Alexander, who earlier scored the endorsement of former presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. Cory Booker.

“I have always admired the way he stood up for working families in the wake of the financial crisis and fought to keep small businesses and our communities afloat during the pandemic,” Alexander said.

“We share a passion for simultaneously building a strong economy that works for all and fighting climate change by making New Jersey a world leader in the renewable energy industry. I cannot wait to work with Sen Menendez on that and so much more once I am elected this November.”

Alexander and Van Drew will debate each other on Wednesday at Stockton University, in an event sponsored by the Press of Atlantic City and Stockton’s Hughes Center for Public Policy. Front Runner New Jersey will participate in the questioning of the candidates.
