CAMDEN — Camden County Police Department Deputy Chief Janell Simpson, who became the first Latina to rise to the level of deputy chief in law enforcement in Camden history, is recognized by Front Runner New Jersey.com during Women’s History Month.

Simpson, who had served in law enforcement since 2002, was elevated to the trailblazing position in 2022. Simpson impressively rose through the ranks as a patrol officer, and various command positions before reaching deputy chief.
A native of Camden, she earned her early experience as a detective in the special victims unit of the department.

When she reached the rank of lieutenant in 2021, she was only the second Latina in the history of the department to serve with that distinction. Simpson was later named captain of the department’s internal affair division and then commander of the special investigation unit.
“In everything I have done over the last 20 years, the love for my city was always in the forefront,” Simpson said in a statement released by the Camden County officials in 2022 after the announcement.
“I was born and raised here so to be able to serve and protect the community that made me who I am, it’s a constant motivator to continue with my career.”
Camden City Mayor Victor Carstarphen said then that Simpson believes in her home community and is determined to make it a better place to live.
“She is an incredible person, a dedicated officer and fully committed to the Camden community,” Carstarphen said then. “As our first deputy chief, Janell is shattering glass ceilings and will inspire other young ladies who wish to pursue a career in law enforcement.”
