ATLANTIC CITY – The Hispanic Association of Atlantic County announced on Thursday, May 22 at its membership meeting that will honor a local labor leader with a new award named after legendary farmworker, organizer and civil rights icon Cesar Chavez.
The award will be given as part of HAAC’s Nuestro Pueblo Awards, which will take place July 10 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City. The event will take place at the facility’s Big Cypress Terrace, which oversees Atlantic City’s historic Boardwalk and Steel Pier.

HAAC President Bert Lopez said at the meeting that the award will be given for someone in the Hispanic community making significant contributions in the local labor movement.
Labor unions continue to play an influential role in New Jersey, particularly Atlantic City casinos, including those in the Northeast. The award, named after Chavez, recognizes the accomplishments of local Latinos in that field.

Lopez called for nominations and others who will be honored during the Nuestro Pueblo Awards. He said nominations can be made for the following categories: Arts and Entertainment, Community Service, Education, Entrepreneurship, HAAC Board Member of the Year, Healthcare, Nuestro Amigo/a (Our Friend), Organizational Amigo/a (Our Friend), Public Service and STEM.
HAAC also approved the nomination of Miguel Morales to the organization’s board of directors. Morales is a registered agent with New York Life and was nominated to the open board seat by Lopez.
HAAC also talked about plans for the upcoming Atlantic City Latino Festival on Sept. 6 at the Showboat Hotel, one of the largest festivals celebrating Latino culture in the state.
HAAC said it would also give out four scholarships, with the winners being introduced at the Nuestro Pueblo Awards. The scholarships drew more than 20 applications this year.
