LUMBERTONTerrance Benson returned as mayor of Lumberton Township on Monday during a township committee swearing-in and reorganization this week.

The former law enforcement officer served as mayor of the township in 2023, making him only the second Black to ever hold the most. Benson, whose term on the committee concludes at the end of 2026, was serving as a committeeman.

“I’m honored to lead Lumberton Township in 2026, thanks to the trust of our township committee, residents, and the unwavering support of my family, which fuels my dedication to driving positive change,” Benson said in a Facebook post.

“Thank you for Commissioner Randy Brolo swearing me in this evening. BTW definitely grateful to have Deputy Mayor Lori Faye Thomas by my side as well.”

In a 2023 interview with Front Runner New Jersey, Benson said he became involved in the political arena through his work with the New Jersey State PBA and always considered himself to be “a voice for the people.”

“I was always taught you can’t complain if you don’t vote,” Benson told FRNJ in that interview. “There’s a long list of people who inspired me; starting with my parents, civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, Barack Obama, Cory Booker, and even my former elementary school teacher Mrs. Linda Ziegler, who always encouraged me to be the best I could be, even when I wasn’t the best student.

“My father always taught us that all you have in this world is your name, and if you mess that up, you’re going to have a rough time navigating life.”

Originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, Lumberton remains on the fastest growing townships in Burlington County with a population of nearly 13,000, a jump of about 20% from the 2000 U.S. Census.
