ATLANTIC CITYDomenique James said he wanted to be a business owner since the fifth grade, wanting to be a positive example in the community and hiring people that would do the same.

The Atlantic City native is doing just that with his Shine & Go Auto Spa LLC. The mobile spa travels to their customers giving them the kind of detailed finishing that would bring a smile to any auto owner.

While owning your own business can bring numerous challenges, James said he also sees many of the perks, including being a example of his blended family of six. He said he wants to make sure he leaves a legacy that his family can be proud of.

James was one of the sponsors who gave away discounted car washes as prices at the Atlantic City NAACP Freedom Fund Gala in April. He said it was a small way he can give back to the community that has already given back to him.

Five Questions

1. FRNJ: What made you become a business owner?

Domenique James: What made me become a business owner I was born to be one. I realized this when I was in the fifth grade at Uptown School Complex. I wanted to start my own business and hire people that look like me. To build a legacy not just for myself and my family but for other families as well. To have a building in Atlantic City with my name on it means something. It shows commitment, drive, and determination.

2. FRNJ: Why did you select your current field?

Domenique James: The reason for the field I selected is that I once said  “I Do” and became a beautiful blended family of 6 plus a dog. Becoming a larger family and including our dog, there is always something being spilled and dog hair all over the vehicle. This process allowed us to become better detailers of our car. Which then gave me the idea of starting a family business.

3. FRNJ: What do you enjoy the most about being a business owner?

Domenique James: What I enjoy the most about being a business owner is being an example to my children. They get to witness what it takes to start a business, and how hard it is but they get to see the drive that their father has to make something of himself. To have my kids working with me is an extreme delight of its own.

4. FRNJ: How important is it for you to have positive African American role models in business?

Domenique James: The importance of positive African American role models in business demonstrates our greatness. I believe we forget who built America, I think we forget about all the businesses and companies that were created after slavery was abolished. We forget about Tulsa, Okla. and Black Wall Street. I think we forget how great we truly are and I want to help us remember. We as melanin people have been the change of culture, style, business, education, etc. We are the leaders that will bring economic change and freedom to our people and more.

5. FRNJ: Anything else would you like to add?

Domenique James: Our vision at Shine & Go Auto Spa is serving our family, friends, and communities with love and integrity. Operating as a family business, here we thrive on providing excellent customer services to everyone as they’re family.
