ATLANTIC CITYHolly Allen said she is passionate about small minority businesses and helping them through her tax services.

Through HDA Business Services LLC, Allen provides critical financial services to small business owners and she is looking to expand.

“I became an entrepreneur due to my enthusiasm for supporting minority small business proprietors and individuals in becoming financially literate and tax compliant,” Allen told Front Runner New Jersey.com.

“With almost 30 years of experience in tax preparation for both businesses and personal taxes, I realized that I could significantly impact my community by providing comprehensive tax planning, consulting, notary services, bookkeeping, payroll, and ITIN certification.”

With tax season coming fast, Allen said she offers her services in English and Spanish and is open year-round to serve her clients.

She said having positive African American business mentors is important because they can serve as a source of encouragement and inspiration.

“Overall, I believe that having positive role models is crucial to personal and professional growth, especially for underrepresented communities,” Allen said. “I am grateful for their influence and will continue to learn from them as I work towards achieving my goals.”

1. FRNJ: What made you become a business owner?

Holly Allen: As the proprietor of HDA Business Services LLC, I became an entrepreneur due to my enthusiasm for supporting minority small business proprietors and individuals in becoming financially literate and tax compliant. With almost 30 years of experience in tax preparation for both businesses and personal taxes, I realized that I could significantly impact my community by providing comprehensive tax planning, consulting, notary services, bookkeeping, payroll, and ITIN certification. My objective was to offer accessible and dependable financial services to clients from the local and surrounding communities, empowering them to accomplish their financial goals and build a brighter future. This dedication to education and communication compelled me to start my own business and become a trusted client resource.

2. FRNJ: Why did you select your current field?

Holly Allen: During my sophomore year of high school, I enrolled in a business law class that covered federal taxation. I found the subject matter to be fascinating, and I soon began preparing taxes for my mother and her friends. A few years later, I had the chance to turn my hobby into a profession and worked as a tax preparer for Jackson Hewitt for 26 years. Throughout my tenure, I availed myself of every learning opportunity to become an expert in the field. When I decided to start my own business, it was only natural to choose tax preparation as my niche since I had already built a reputation for providing excellent service and had a loyal clientele. 

3. FRNJ: What do you enjoy the most about being a business owner?

Holly Allen: What I enjoy most about being a business owner is the opportunity to impact my community and clients’ lives positively. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know I’m helping minority small business owners and individuals become financially literate and tax-compliant.

The ability to provide valuable services, such as tax planning, consulting, notary services, bookkeeping, payroll, and ITIN certification, allows me to support my clients in achieving their financial goals and building a better future. I take pride in being a resource they can rely on for guidance and assistance.

As a business owner, I can also create a work environment that aligns with my values and vision. I can prioritize education and communication, which are critical elements of my business, and tailor my services to meet my clients’ specific needs.

Overall, the sense of purpose and the opportunity to positively impact the lives of others are the most rewarding aspects of being a business owner for me.  

4. FRNJ: How important is it for you to have positive African American role models in business?

Holly Allen: As a small business owner who is also a woman of color, I understand the importance of having positive role models in the world of entrepreneurship. They don’t just serve as inspiration and sources of guidance; they also offer valuable insights and advice on navigating the complexities of business ownership. In my journey of building a sustainable business that empowers minority-owned small businesses and individuals, I have drawn inspiration from successful entrepreneurs who have faced similar challenges and emerged victorious. Their stories motivate me to keep pursuing my mission and to strive for excellence in serving my clients and community. Positive role models can also be a source of encouragement during tough times and remind us of the importance of perseverance and resilience in the business world. They help break down barriers and stereotypes, showing that success is attainable for individuals from diverse backgrounds.
