GLASSBORO — The Rowan University NAACP will honor alumna and award-winning Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Melanie Burney at its Excellence Networking Gala at Rowan University’s Chamberlain Student Center Ballroom from 8-11 p.m. on March 22.
The Rowan branch said Burney has been instrumental in advocating for positive change that has directly impacted students of color.
The Excellence Networking Gala is an annual event organized by the Rowan University NAACP Chapter that serves as a celebration of achievements and milestones along with a platform to raise awareness and support for the branch’s ongoing initiatives.
“This event is vital to exposing our students to different spheres of networking,” said Rowan NAACP President Esther Lendore in a statement. “Our organization noticed that students of color were waiting too long to invest in mentors and advance their professional careers.
“By opening this opportunity to various majors and bringing in professionals connected to them, we expose our students to possibilities they may have never considered before.”
Organizers said they anticipate more than 160 guests for the event, and it is open to all who wish to attend, with RSVP required.
Rowan NAACP said they are also hosting the “Empower Her Series” in honor of Women’s History Month. Those events will focus on highlighting the strengths and achievements of women of color in various spheres, including the professional realm and wellness initiatives.
