ATLANTIC CITY — The life and legacy of the late Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver will be honored at the annual Atlantic City Women’s March on March 23 where organizers expect more than 500 supporters and allies to attend.
Former New Jersey Secretary of State Rev. Dr. Regena Thomas will serve as the event’s keynote speaker. Other speakers include State Sen. Britnee Timberlake and consultant Jeaninne LaRue.
“This is a celebration and honoring of Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver and the announcement of the family’s foundation in her name, community organizations, unions and other extraordinary women,” co-sponsor Stephenine Dixon told Front Runner New Jersey.com.
The parade lineup will begin at Rhode Island Avenue and Boardwalk at 10 a.m. with an event to be held at the Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall at noon.
Dixon said the march is being organized by the original 2019 steering committee, including co-chair Dr. Nycole Lyles-Benton.
Estina Baker is the event’s senior advisor. Committee members include Shalanda Austin, Yolanda Cooper, Shermaine Gunter-Gary, Sheila Harvey, Fatima Heyward, Bashira Khan, Antoinette Miles, Joyce Mollineaux, Maisha Moore, Pamela Thomas, Maisha Moore, Digna Townsend, and Dr. Thelma Witherspoon.
Oliver, who died in office in last year, was the first African American to serve as lieutenant governor in New Jersey as was the first Black woman to serve as speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly. She served as keynote speaker at the 2020 Atlantic City Women’s March.
The new remodeled courtyard plaza at City Hall in Atlantic City will be named in her honor.
