Women’s clothing is Samantha Hyman’s thing and it has been for a long time.

The local entrepreneur who started her online fashion store VERRE, Hyman said she hopes to soon have her own line soon, she is living out her dream of being a business owner and selling fashion.

She admitted the business owner bug caught her early, before most young people consider getting a car or going to the prom but said that passion is what led her to some of her greatest joys and being able to give back. She said meeting other local business owners like her has brought her a great sense of enjoyment and kinship.

Here is what Hyman has to say about her business and passion and her words.

5 Questions

1. FRNJ: What made you become a business owner?

Samantha A.: To start, I’ve always had a strong desire to work for myself. I can remember as far back as the sixth grade, at about 11 or 12 years old I decided I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I enjoy the autonomy of creating my own schedule and having the freedom that entrepreneurship brings. I had many hobbies and interests, but fashion was my number one. Fashion and business are two things I love and creating an online store was my way of combining my two passions.

2. FRNJ: Why did you select your current field?

Samantha A.: My dream has always been to become a fashion designer, VERRE felt like that perfect segway into doing so. After completing my business degree at Florida International University I knew corporate was not my calling and started planning for VERRE during the thick of the pandemic. I currently don’t sell any of my own fashions, but I hope to soon offer some original designs.

3. FRNJ: What do you enjoy the most about being a business owner?

Samantha A.: I enjoy meeting other passionate entrepreneurs and learning their why. We all have different reasons as to why we chose this path. Some entrepreneurs’ businesses are born out of tragedy, and they use that pain to create something beautiful. I’ve been able to learn so many new things just by engaging in conversation with other business owners. Meeting new customers is also a source of enjoyment. Being a business owner has blessed me to meet many different people from many walks of life.

4. FRNJ: How important is it for you to have positive African American role models in business?

Samantha A.: I often contribute my success and knowledge to being surrounded by African American educators. I feel like people truly underestimate the value of our teachers/educators. After talking with friends who didn’t attend the same school as me I saw just how rare Black male teachers are. I was blessed to meet two teachers in particular who made a very positive impact on my life. A special thank you to Mr. Sherman Denby and the late Maurice DeShields for the lessons, love, wisdom, and care you both showered us all with day in and day out. Representation truly matters.

5. FRNJ: Anything else would you like to add?

Samantha A.: I would like to thank my family and friends, followers, customers, supporters (aka my boho babes), and anyone who has helped me through this journey. Please follow us, share and look out for our events via our website at www.shopverre.com

For our next event, we’re hosting our annual brunch on July 20 at Melavents in Philadelphia. There will be food, music, games, and shopping from us and local vendors. We’d love to see some new and familiar faces. Thank you for your time and support. VERRE. “ Apparel that touches mind, body, & soul.”
