DELRAN – State Sen. Troy Singleton, State Sen. Mike Testa and Gloucester County Deputy Director Jim Jefferson joined with the NJ Agricultural Society initiative Farmers Against Hunger on Friday, Nov. 22 to package food that will be sent to pantries for the needy.
It’s an annual event driven to make sure no one is left hungry in New Jersey, organizers said. The Farmers Against Hunger initiative is meant to reduce food waste, by helping farmers and wholesalers throughout New Jersey share their surplus produce with those in need.
It also strives to reduce food insecurity, by increasing access to fresh and healthy produce for everyone in New Jersey.
“It has become an annual tradition for Team Troy to volunteer with Farmers Against Hunger on the Friday before Thanksgiving to help them bag donated produce that will be distributed to local food pantries ahead of the holiday,” Singleton said on Facebook.
“[On Friday, Nov. 22], we were joined by Burlington County Deputy Director Dan O’Connell, Gloucester County Deputy Director Jim Jefferson, Senator Michael Testa, as well as 20 other volunteers who so generously volunteered their time to help address food insecurity in our region. This organization does incredible work in partnership with farmers across New Jersey, and would welcome your support as well.”
The bagging took place at the organization’s warehouse space at 173 Creek Road in Delran.
“A special thank you to Consalo Family Farms and other local farmers whose generosity makes this vital work possible. Seeing farmers, volunteers, and organizations come together to tackle hunger in our communities is truly inspiring,” Testa said on Facebook. “This is the power of New Jersey agriculture and community spirit in action. Grateful to support efforts that make such a meaningful impact on so many lives.”
Jefferson said he was honored to work shoulder to shoulder with volunteers to make sure that as many families has possible have Thanksgiving meals this years.
“What an honor it was to join Farmers Against Hunger for their Annual Thanksgiving Packing Event as volunteers bagged thousands of pounds of produce to help those dealing with food insecurity,” Jefferson said on Facebook. “The Consalo family operates a beautiful farm in Gloucester County, as well as several others in surrounding counties.
“Such an awesome day to work alongside members of New Jersey Agricultural Society, the Jersey Fresh campaign and Senator Troy Singleton, who is the epitome of a public servant.”
