TRENTON – Cherry Hill native Andy Kim is now Sen. Andy Kim after Gov. Phil Murphy named him to fill to remaining term to a seat in won in January, getting a jump of few weeks on his new duties.

Kim, who became the first Korean American to represent the state in the Senate in U.S. history, replaced embattled Sen. Bob Menendez, who resigned in the summer. Murphy named George Helmy to replace Menendez until January.

Kim won a hotly contested primary in June and then the general election in November for the senatorial spot. Murphy on Sunday, appointed Kim do he could be started on his work.

“Today, I am appointing Senator-elect Andy Kim to the United States Senate so he can begin his term in office before the new year begins,” Murphy said in a statement. “Taking this step will allow Senator Kim to embark on the smoothest possible transition into his new role so he can hit the ground running serving the people of New Jersey.”

“I want to thank our outgoing U.S. Senator George Helmy for his continued service to New Jersey and the nation over the past three months and for working closing with Senator-elect Kim to ensure a seamless transition.

Murphy recognized Kim and his historic election as the first Asian American Senator from New Jersey and as the first Korean American Senator in the nation.

“His election represents a proud milestone – not just for our great state, but for our entire country. I look forward to working with Senator Kim to continue lowering costs for New Jerseyans, defending our fundamental freedoms, and building a stronger and fairer state for every family,” Murphy said.

Kim said it is an honor to get to represent the state that gave his family a chance at the American Dream in the U.S. Senate.

“It’s a dream that remains out of reach for too many of our neighbors, and one that I’m ready on day one to fight for,” Kim said. “I want to thank Governor Murphy and Senator Helmy for ensuring that New Jersey was well represented during this transition, and look forward to getting to work for the people.”


Kim has dedicated his life to serving the country. Before being elected to the Senate, he served New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional District for three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.

He previously worked as a career public servant under both Democrats and Republicans, having served at USAID, the Pentagon, the State Department, the White House National Security Council, and in Afghanistan as an advisor to the 4-Star Commander.

In the Senate, Kim is committed to building a better future for his two little boys and generations to come by strengthening America’s national and economic security. He is working on an agenda to bring the country together, combat corruption, and ensure our democracy is reflective of all voices.

He is focused on strong measures that tackle the affordability crisis and boost our economy by investing in small businesses and innovation, creating fairness and opportunities for working families, and honoring America’s promises to military families and veterans.

Kim is a proud husband and father to seven and nine-year old troublemaking little boys, and, as the son of South Korean immigrants, humbled to be the first Korean American ever elected to the United States Senate.
