WASHINGTON, D.C. – Delran’s Dr. Herb Conaway Jr. made another historic first on Friday in the U.S. House of Representatives when he became the first Black physician to have voting privileges in Congress.

Conaway, who won New Jersey’s District 3 House seat once held by Andy Kim, was sworn-in to the 119th Congress, officially giving him the historic first. Conaway, who held a seat in the New Jersey Assembly for more than 25 years, also has law degree and is an Air Force veteran.

“It is one of the greatest honors of my life to be sworn in to represent the people of New Jersey’s 3rd District and I am humbled by the tremendous responsibility that has been entrusted to me by my neighbors,” Conaway said in a statement released by his office.

“The American people deserve a government that works for them, and I am committed to working with my colleagues to defend democracy, protect reproductive rights, and uplift our economy to ensure that the working families in my district and across the country can thrive for years to come. I am eager to get to work, putting people over politics to deliver results for everyone back home.”

Conaway, the son of a teacher and a nurse, earned an undergraduate degree from Princeton University, a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, and a law degree from Rutgers Law School in Camden.

A lifelong resident of Burlington County, Conaway began his career by serving in the U.S. Air Force, where he rose to the rank of captain in the Medical Corps at McGuire Air Force Base.

For 27 years, he represented the 7th Legislative District in the New Jersey Assembly. In the New Jersey Legislature, he chaired the Health Committee and served on the Budget Committee and the Military and Veterans Affairs Committee.

“Congressman Conaway will continue to advocate for an economy that benefits the families of New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional District,” a statement from his office said.

New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional District encompasses nearly all of Burlington County and parts of Mercer and Monmouth counties.
