SOMERS POINT — Sourced from fresh ingredients and a South of the Border flair, Mexiquila will delight with original food and drinks influenced by some of Mexico’s most enduring dishes.

Located at 101 East Maryland Avenue near the Somers Point-Longport Bridge, Mexiquila stands out as a destination with plenty of parking on both sides of the restaurant. The inside is upscale, with a fireplace and décor but you won’t feel out of place dressing casual.

It’s the type of atmosphere Paul Williams, general manager of Mexiquila told Front Runner New Jersey, an establishment inspired by a Mexican setting with the high-quality food and style worthy of a Michelin Star rating.

FRNJ’s reviewers arrived without a reservation, and while those are highly advised, the Mexiquila staff made the wait pleasurable and comfortable. In fact, the table near the entrance served our needs nicely.

The waiter was knowledgeable, personable and didn’t mind spending extra time guiding us through the menu describing to.us their signature dishes and drinks. Although the restaurant was quite busy we were given the time needed to become acquainted with the establishments variety of food choices.

FRNJ tried the made-from-scratch Guacamole and chip appetizer, Taco Lobster and Maiz, Nachos Con Queso with ground beef, and Taco Truffle Mushroom with a rice appetizer. The meal came out hot, spicy and flavorful. Spicy is one of the restaurant’s trademarks. The portions were appropriate sizes and didn’t leave you hungry for extras.

The cost for three came in about $150.

The food menu is wide and varied, ranging from Calamari Frito as one of its appetizer, a spiced crab and corn bisque, a tasty Tempura Street Bowl, to Rotisserie Jerk Chicken and American Grilled Lamb.

The organic margaritas were off the charts with taste and very refreshing.  Williams later told us that all of their drinks are made from fresh ingredients courtesy of a $10,000 juicer which is used to make all of their drinks one of a kind.

Williams said that Mexiquila’s bartender Austin has taken advantage of the juicer to create design his own crafted cocktails, making the restaurant a truly unique spot for that special night on the town.

A previous review said Mexiquila has possibly “the most eclectic selection of tequilas, mezcals, and Mexican distillations on the East Coast. An assortment that perfectly complements each and every dish on the inspired menu.”

Our point, exactly.

The experience, atmosphere, quality ingredients and uniquely crafted food and drink make Mexiquila a must to visit.
