Dear Community, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to share something deeply personal and close to my heart — Cerrando La Brecha, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees in urban communities. This mission resonates with me in profound ways, and your unwavering support has been invaluable to this cause.
Allow me to introduce myself — Gabily A. Gonzalez. I was born in Guatemala City on May 8, 1993, and at the age of seven, my family and I embarked on a long, arduous journey to the United States. Denied family visas, we braved the unknown for a month, crossing treacherous borders and enduring perilous conditions. Our journey was filled with loss and fear — especially when I had to say goodbye to my grandmother, a key figure in my life, and when my father had to leave us behind for a while to ensure our eventual reunion.
Our arrival in Mexico City brought temporary respite, but we continued to face hardships as we made our way north. I vividly recall the fear of being separated from my younger brother as we navigated through Mexicali, and the ever-present danger of detection by authorities.
Once we reached South Central Los Angeles, we faced the stark realities of being undocumented. My family struggled, and I quickly took on the role of caregiver, looking after my brother while balancing the challenges of my own schooling.
Despite these obstacles, I was determined to succeed. Through perseverance and a commitment to education, I graduated high school and eventually pursued higher education, never allowing my circumstances to define me.
Today, I am proud to channel my experiences into advocating for marginalized communities, especially immigrants, as I work to ensure they have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.
This is where Cerrando La Brecha comes in. This organization is more than just a nonprofit to me — it’s a lifeline for those who share the struggles I lived through. It empowers vulnerable immigrant communities by providing them with essential support and a platform to be heard.
Having lived through the challenges faced by migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees, I understand firsthand the critical need for advocacy and services that can help these individuals rebuild their lives and achieve their potential.

Quería tomarme un momento para compartir algo que es muy personal y cercano a mi corazón: Cerrando La Brecha, una organización sin fines de lucro dedicada a empoderar a migrantes, solicitantes de asilo y refugiados en comunidades urbanas. Esta misión resuena profundamente conmigo, y tu apoyo incondicional ha sido invaluable para esta causa.
Permíteme presentarme: Gabily A. González. Nací en la Ciudad de Guatemala el 8 de mayo de 1993, y a la edad de siete años, mi familia y yo emprendimos un largo y arduo viaje hacia los Estados Unidos. Negados nuestros visados familiares, nos vimos obligados a enfrentar lo desconocido durante un mes, cruzando fronteras peligrosas y soportando condiciones extremas. Nuestro viaje estuvo marcado por la pérdida y el miedo, especialmente cuando tuve que despedirme de mi abuela, una figura clave en mi vida, y cuando mi padre tuvo que dejarnos atrás por un tiempo para asegurar nuestra futura reunión.
Nuestra llegada a la Ciudad de México nos brindó un respiro temporal, pero seguimos enfrentando dificultades mientras nos dirigíamos hacia el norte. Recuerdo vívidamente el miedo de separarme de mi hermano menor mientras atravesábamos Mexicali, y el constante peligro de ser detectados por las autoridades. Al llegar al sur de Los Ángeles, nos enfrentamos a las duras realidades de vivir sin documentos. Mi familia luchaba, y rápidamente asumí el rol de cuidadora, velando por mi hermano mientras enfrentaba los desafíos de mi propia educación.
A pesar de estos obstáculos, mi determinación nunca flaquea. A través de la perseverancia y un compromiso con la educación, me gradué de la secundaria y, más tarde, continué con estudios superiores, sin permitir que mis circunstancias me definieron. Hoy, me enorgullece canalizar mis experiencias para abogar por las comunidades marginadas, especialmente los inmigrantes, para asegurarse de que tengan acceso a los recursos y oportunidades que necesitan para prosperar.
Y es aquí donde Cerrando La Brecha juega un papel fundamental. Esta organización es mucho más que una ONG para mí: es una tabla de salvación para aquellos que comparten las mismas luchas que viví.
Empodera a las comunidades inmigrantes vulnerables, brindándoles apoyo esencial y una plataforma para ser escuchados. Habiendo vivido de primera mano los desafíos que enfrentan los migrantes, solicitantes de asilo y refugiados, entiendo la necesidad crítica de contar con defensoría y servicios que les ayuden a reconstruir sus vidas y alcanzar su potencial.
