LAWNSIDE — Jacqueline Miller-Bentley, the member of the Lawnside Historical Society board, will speak about the local impact of the historic Underground Railroad at the Gloucester Township Branch Library, 15 South Black Horse Pike, in Blackwood, on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 11 a.m.
Miller-Bentley’s “Journey on the Underground Railroad” presentation will chronicles the challenges and triumphs of escapees from enslavement and their allies. Miller-Bentley co-directs the Underground Railroad Camp for middle school students.
Her talks come after another library event that took place on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Bellmawr Library Branch by E. Muneerah Higgs. In that presentation. Higgs, a master educator, talked to visitors about her presentation, entitled the New Jersey Underground Railroad Experience.
In that presentation Higgs detailed the innovative project she and a group of New Jersey teachers are creating on the UGRR throughout our state. Mrs. Higgs co-directs the Underground Railroad Camp for middle school students.
Nearly 40 Lawnside educators had attended a professional development workshop coordinated by member Shai Whitney on teaching the Underground Railroad in January.
Working with Mrs. Alyssa Miller, director of curriculum and instruction, the Society hosted Mott House visits by pupils in the fall, and plans K-8 classroom visits this month.
Another professional development session and a school-wide assembly with a guest presenter from the Lest We Forget Museum will take place in March.
