BRIDGETON — Los Molcajetes Mexican Restaurant, tucked away at 155 Irving Avenue in Bridgeton, is a hidden gem serving up authentic Mexican flavors with heart and tradition.
The moment you step inside, the aroma of Mexican spices sizzling on the grill sets the tone and awakens the senses. Be prepared to awaken your taste buds with the dining experience you are about to enjoy as your authentic Mexican order will be brought to your table.

Upon being seated, we were welcomed with a basket of warm and crisp tortilla chips accompanied by three distinct salsas — each homemade with its own depth of flavor. A creamy avocado-jalapeño salsa, a tangy tomatillo-based green salsa, and a bold red salsa proved a delightful mix of spice and zest, as we sampled and indulged Los Molcajetes’ signature creations.
Los Molcajetes offers a variety of beverages, including a selection of Mexican and American-made sodas served in old-fashioned glass bottles. Sipping on a soda from a glass bottle brings back nostalgia for a time when beverages had a crisp, refreshing taste straight from the fridge.

During our visit, our table enjoyed a variety of traditional dishes.
The burritos, generously filled with seasoned chicken and chorizo, were wrapped tightly with rice, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and crumbled queso fresco. Each bite was a testament to the rich flavors that define Mexican cuisine. The nachos topped the dishes for presentation. The toppings were diced to perfection while the flavor of pico de gallo, guacamole, seasoned ground beef, and melted cheese made reaching for more after each bite.

The three shrimp tacos, served on soft flour tortillas topped with fresh lettuce, guacamole, and queso fresco was hearty flavorful and absolutely delicious. The torta — a Mexican sandwich layered with grilled chicken breast, lettuce, tomatoes, and guacamole — delivered a satisfying combination of textures and tastes.
To satisfy the attendees’ sweet craving, we agreed to indulge in the warm churros and fried plantain. They were served to us as a sampler and accompanied with a side of warm sweetened condensed milk.
The churros were served warm and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The grilled plantains were warm perfectly caramelized. on the grill. As we completed to the end of our journey at Los Molcajetes, we felt transported to a time when families dined together, and meals were prepared from scratch with love and care.
Then, we were delighted after receiving our check for $60 for the expansive meal, which was an amazing value for five guests.
Owned by Maria Benites and Elder Garcia, Los Molcajetes has been a part of the Bridgeton community for 13 years. The couple, originally from North Jersey, started with a humble food truck before deciding to establish a permanent home for their growing customer base.

About 40 years ago, I remember my first introduction to so-called ‘Mexican food’ — a Tex-Mex dish that an old friend of mine brought with him back from Texas dubbed ‘Mexican Lasagna,’ consisting of layers of tortilla chips, refried beans, cheddar cheese, salsa, onions, and green chiles.
It was my first taste of refried beans and chiles, and while enjoyable, it barely scratched the surface of true Mexican cuisine. Years later, when my nephew, who was married to a Mexican woman, introduced me to authentic Mexican fare, I realized just how much depth and tradition go into every dish. That same depth and tradition shine through at Los Molcajetes.
Los Molcajetes caters to casual diners and families, offering a relaxed setting with daily specials that keep customers coming back. With ample parking and extended hours from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day except Saturday, it is a convenient and recommended stop for anyone craving authentic Mexican cuisine.
