PLEASANTVILLEKaleem Shabazz, president of the Atlantic City NAACP, Alexander Mendoza, of El Pueblo Unido of Atlantic City, and Christian Ragland, vice president of health equity with AtlantiCare, are headlining a Citizens Town Hall at Mount Zion Baptist Church on Thursday, Aug. 14.

The event, at 352 South New Road, which starts at 6 p.m., was created to receive public input over concerns on a variety of topics happening nationally and locally, from diversity issues to health care, immigration and other issues, organizers said.

Shabazz, who also serves as city council vice president in Atlantic City, said be believes many of the actions done by the federal government through executive orders by President Donald Trump are illegal and today is the time to rally people against such policies.

“We must lift each other up at a time when our elected officials refuse to hear from us and actively vote against our interests,” Alice Carcilli, of Indivisible Atlantic City Empathy United said in a message to Front Runner New Jersey.

Supporters of the Trump administration have said the president’s actions and orders are what he campaigned on in the last general election and believe his policies are popular among the American people.

According to the latest Gallup Poll taken last month, Trump’s job approval rating tumbled to 37%, the lowest of his term and only slightly higher that the all-time record of worst rating for a president at this point into his second term.

“This event will feature a panel of local activists and advocates to speak on the issues, answer questions from community members, and make calls to action,” Carilli said.

Mendoza will be representing one of the most recognized groups fighting for immigration rights in the region. Ragland, is a healthcare diversity leader and part of he of the largest medical systems in South Jersey.

Along with Shabazz, Mendoza and Ragland, other speakers include David Campbell, executive director of the Atlantic Center for Independent Living; Shauna Hutsell, of the Atlantic County Lived Experiences Advisory Board; Mico Lucide, executive director of Atlantic County Queer Alliance; Michael Ortiz, Not One More and New Jersey Organizing Project; and Barbara Reault, president of the Atlantic County Council on Education Associations.
