Op-Ed: Luz Vasquez, Candidate for Vineland Board of Education

OP-ED
EDITOR’S NOTE: Front Runner New Jersey.com has asked candidates to address our readers about their campaigns through Op-Ed pieces. Today’s Op-Ed is by Luz Vasquez, candidate for Vineland School Board.
VINELAND — As a lifelong resident of Vineland, graduate of Vineland high school, parent who raised four children in the Vineland public school system and community leader, Luz Vasquez has established herself as a voice for families and advocate for better education both at the state and local level.
Vasquez’s platform is built on three primary pillars; educate, empower, and equip. Within those three pillars, there are specific areas of focus based on personal experience, observation, and data. Vasquez is a proponent of parental rights, academic based curriculum, fiscal responsibility, robust safety standards for students and staff, and expanding career opportunities. The following are the pillars of Luz’s platform.
Educate: We will provide our students with the highest quality educational experience that focuses on academics, ensuring that materials and programs are age appropriate to protect our most vulnerable in their formattable years, and challenging enough to prepare high schoolers for the real world. We will focus on improving test scores by partnering with our educators, parents, and students to address barriers.
A high-quality educational environment is also a safe one. I am committed to reducing incidents of violence so students can learn, and educators can teach without distractions. We are responsible for providing a safe environment that everyone can thrive in, an educational environment that can inspire creativity and critical thinking and one that holds individuals accountable for violating policies.
Empower: We will empower parents to speak up for their child, be included in decisions concerning their child’s education, and notify them of any challenges that arise concerning their child. The authority and rights of parents are not negotiable.
We will empower students to advocate for themselves and what they need to be successful. Students that take ownership of their individual education plans and have input in what is decided are more likely to cooperate and work towards goal completion and accept accountability. We will empower educators to speak up when they see things that need improvement, or simply want to give feedback, without fear of repercussion.
As frontline staff, we acknowledge their input is valuable and necessary in developing policies and programs. We will empower the public to be involved in financial matters through open meetings and transparency in our process to ensure taxpayers, sound financial accountability. Communication will be expected from the district to the public with the public invited to do the same with concerns and/or questions.
Equip: We will equip our educators with the tools they need to be successful. That includes appropriate staffing ratios, materials, training, and additional support, to ensure their success. We will equip students with the life skills necessary to be ready for the real world, focusing on financial literacy and skilled trades for students who are not college bound.
We will equip parents with appropriate community resources to address the complex needs that often hinder positive education outcomes. We will equip the community with information on career opportunities and encourage participation in job fairs for all levels of employment within the district.
Vasquez is committed to working with fellow board members and the district superintendent to develop goals, and objectives that address the needs of the district to lower the chronic absenteeism rate and raise test scores across the board. Vasquez humbly asks for your support Tuesday, Nov. 4.
