TRENTON — Prominent statewide Latino organizations announced this week the creation of Serve for Change, a coalition to advocate for Latino representation within state government leadership and appointments.
“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Governor-Elect [Mikie] Sherrill and recognize the tremendous task she and her team have before them as they prepare to govern,” Arlene Quinones-Perez, general counsel for Latina Civic, said in a released statement.
According to exit polls by NBC News and CNN, 68% of Hispanic voted for Sherrill to be New Jersey governor in the General Election compared to 31% for Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli. Ciattarelli had touted his endorsement from President Donald Trump before the election.
The exit polls showed that among Hispanics, 73% of Latinas voted for the governor-elect and 61% of Latinos did the same.
“We look forward to partnering with her and the Transition Team’s leadership to help identify talented and qualified Hispanic New Jerseyans who share the Governor-Elect’s vision to make life easier and more affordable for all of us in the Garden State,” Quinones-Perez said.

Serve for Change said a dozen volunteer-led organizations have signed on, including:
*American Mexican Regional Chamber of Commerce, President Francisco J. Del Toro
*Ecuadorian-American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey, President Diego Munoz
*Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey, President Cristal Lambert
*Latina Civic Action, Vice President Lucia Gomez
*Latina Civic Foundation, President Maria Del Cid-Kosso
*Latina Civic PAC, General Counsel Arlene Quinones-Perez
*Latino Action Network, President Javier Robles
*Latinx Greeks for America, President Rudy Rodas
*La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc., National President Pedro Claudio
*LUPE Fund, President Rosemarie Moyeno Matos
*Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey, Chairman Luis De La Hoz
*Unidos US Action Fund, President Rafael Collazo
The announcement said that more Latino organizations will be included in the future.
New Jersey’s Latino population accounts for about 22% of the state’s total population. Organizers said the mission of this group is to ensure at least equal representation in state’s government by engaging proactively in the appointments process.
