Bruce E. Weekes Op-Ed: Small Family Deserves Time to Heal
Op-Ed
EDITOR’S NOTE: Mr. Weekes’ comments come from a Facebook post he released on Dec. 19, after Mayor Marty Small was acquitted on all counts of charges of abuse related to his teenage daughter. The post was edited for style and grammar.
BY BRUCE E. WEEKES
Situations involving leaders, particularly Black leaders, such as Marty Small Sr., serve as an important reminder that the justice system is grounded in precedent, procedure and due process, not public pressure or over sensationalized online opinions.
Too often, longstanding power structures emerge from behind the shadows to advance agendas that seek to not only undermine Black political leadership, but also to destabilize the principles and strength of the Black family.
Again, the justice system does not operate on false narratives “twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools.” It operates in jurisprudence.
