BRIDGETON – As the nation celebrates a century of Black history commemorations, the
Bridgeton Free Public Library is inviting the community to explore the African American experience through its 2026 Black History Month Film Series.
The event will be hosted at 150 E. Commerce St., the series features a curated selection of films that span historical epics to modern supernatural dramas.
The library kicked off the series with Spike Lee’s iconic “Malcolm X” (1992) on Saturday, February 7. The 202-minute film offers a sweeping look at the activist’s journey from his early life to his pivotal role as a leader in the civil rights movement.
The series continues later this month with two intense Thursday evening screenings:
“Judas and the Black Messiah“ (2021): Scheduled for Thursday, February 19, at 5 p.m., this Shaka King film tells the gripping true story of FBI informant William O’Neal’s infiltration of the Illinois Black Panther Party and the tragic betrayal of Chairman Fred Hampton.
“Sinners“ (2025): Closing the series on Thursday, February 26, at 5 p.m. is director Ryan Coogler’s recent hit. Set in the 1930s Mississippi Delta, it stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers who encounter malevolent supernatural forces upon returning to their hometown.
“Black history is American history,” library representatives shared in a recent announcement, emphasizing that these screenings serve as a space for reflection and community education. The films will be projected on the library’s main floor, accessible via the front steps or the side ramp.
All screenings are free to the public, and no prior registration is required. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own snacks to enjoy during the films. Given the PG-13 and R ratings of the selections, the library advises parental discretion.
For more information on these screenings or other Black History Month programs, including upcoming youth workshops and author talks, residents can visit the official library website or call (856) 451-2620.
