Celebrating Black History Month Throughout South Jersey

Black history month, which is celebrated every February, is a time to recognize and
honor the achievements, struggles, and the lasting influences Black Americans leave on
our society.
Throughout the month of February, many local events here in New Jersey
will celebrate Black History Month. If you are looking to celebrate, you can review the
list of events below or even go out to support a black owned business.
Atlantic County
The Marjorie & Lewis Katz JCC in Margate will be celebrating Black History Month with
their art exhibit “Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future” from Feb. 2 through March
1. The exhibit will feature works by several acclaimed artists and includes a gallery
reception on Thursday, Feb. 12, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with special remarks from
Atlantic City Councilman Kaleem Shabazz. The event is free and open to the public,
with music, light refreshments, and artwork available for purchase.

Camden County
Rutgers Camden will be hosting their “Hand Me Down the Silver Trumpet” show through
Feb. 6-Feb. 15 honoring African American recording artists who created “race records” at Victor Records in Camden, New Jersey, during the 1920s and 1930s. The show will feature performances of classic blues, jazz, and gospel music by students, alumni, guest artists, and a live band. Cape May County
The Carroll Gallery at the Carriage House will be hosting their “Black Legacy of Historic
Cape May: Unexpected History” exhibit from Jan. 16 through April 12. The exhibit
highlights the lasting impact of Black residents and visitors on Cape May’s history,
culture, and National Historic Landmark status. Stories of abolitionists, civil rights
leaders, educators, business leaders, and artists will be featured. Admission to the
exhibit is free.

Cumberland County
Rowan College of South Jersey’s Cumberland Campus will host a free “Celebrating
Black Culture & Community” event on Friday, February 21 at 7 p.m. in the Guaracini
Center. In the previous year they featured a keynote speaker, hip hop, poetry, drumline
performances, and dance honoring African diasporic traditions.

Ocean County
Celebrate Black History Month with live music and food at the Ocean County Library
featuring a food tasting prepared by members of the Toms River Area NAACP and a
musical performance by Dave Revels. Revels is known for his work with legendary
groups such as The Drifters and The Persuasions, as well as his Motown tribute show
Shadows of the 60s.
