BRIDGETON – The City of Bridgeton’s Urban Enterprise Zone announced that its annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration will take place on the city’s downtown riverfront at 2 East Commerce Street from 1-7 p.m. on Sunday, May 3.

The family themed event will include the crowning of Miss Cinco de Mayo, live traditional Mexican and Latin music, vendors and a wide assortment of food and games. Along with a community Taco Eating contest, there will be Mexican Bingo (Loteria), a live Mariaichi performers, and storytelling.

Last year’s Cinco de Mayo celebration was one the largest in the history of Bridgeton and organizers are hoping for another large turnout.

Stephanie Gonzalez, coordinator of the Bridgeton UEZ said the program is currently accepting free vendor applications for the event. Interested vendors can contact here at Gonzalezs@CityofBridgeton.com

“We invite you to be part of this exciting, UEZ community-focused event that celebrates culture, supports local businesses, and brings our community together,” organizers said on social media.

Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for “Fifth of May,” is a holiday commemorating the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla, symbolizing unity and resistance against foreign intervention.

While celebrated in Puebla with military parades, it is not Mexican Independence Day; in the United States, it has grown into a widespread celebration of Mexican American culture, heritage, food, and music.

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more widely in the U.S. than in Mexico as a mark of Mexican-American pride that gained popularity in the 1960s and 1970s.
