Rutgers-Camden Sets Week Long MLK Activities

CAMDEN — Rutgers University-Camden will celebrate Martin Luther King Day with a Day of Service, Events and Speaker Series. Rutgers University-Camden officials said the events provide opportunities for the campus and local community to celebrate the life, legacy and leadership of King.
“After speaking with students, we realized the need to expand our focus when recognizing and remembering the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” said Rutgers-Camden Chancellor Antonio D. Tillis.
“To that end, our speakers will go beyond King’s iconic ‘I Have a Dream’ speech to offer a deeper understanding of King and the civil rights movement.”
- Rutgers-Camden’s Day of Service on Monday (Jan. 16) will include a community cleanup at Cramer Hill Community Center, 1035 Reeves Avenue, in Camden from 9 a.m. to noon.
- A screening of the movie “Till,” focused on the Civil Rights death of Emmet Till, and producer talk back will take place at the Walter Gordon Theater, 314 Linden Street, in Camden at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
- The Rutgers-Camden community will take part in the “I Have a Dream” Clothesline Project in the Scarlet Lounge of the Rutgers-Camden Campus Center, 326 Penn Street, from 12:45-1:45 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19.
- Nationally-recognized anti-racism author and researcher Tim Wise will discuss the subject of anti-racism during a talk at the Rutgers-Camden Campus Center in the Multipurpose Room on Jan. 24 from 12:45-1:45 p.m.
- On Jan. 30, the university will host the Children’s Crusade: Civil Rights, Youth and Activism at the Rutgers-Camden Campus Center in the South Conference Room ABC from 11:20 a.m.-12:20 p.m.
