Sisters and Brothers, as you know, we worked on Racial Impact Statements. As we head into August, please consider signing on your organization to this letter supporting the implementation of New Jersey’s 2017 racial impact statement law.
You may recall that racial impact statements are similar to fiscal or environmental impact statements and provide legislators with a statistical analysis of the projected impact of criminal justice policy changes prior to enactment. Four other states — Connecticut, Iowa, Minnesota, and Oregon — have similar policies.
Over the last year, New Jersey advocates anchored by a faith coalition have worked to demand implementation to ensure state practitioners are adhering to the law. The deadline to join the letter is Wednesday, Aug. 7. Please let me know if you have questions.
