ATLANTIC CITY — The Hispanic Association of Atlantic County last month named five scholarship winners, recognizing some of the best and brightest in the community.

HAAC annually gives scholarships to local youth that benefit them as they pursue a college education. Four students were given $1,000 scholarships.

Winners included:

  • Melanie Contreras, Egg Harbor Township H.S. who will attend the University of Pennsylvania for Nursing.
  • Isabela Simpson, Atlantic City H.S., who will attend Stevens Institute of Technology for Chemical Engineering.
  • Andrew Morales-Martinez, Atlantic City H.S. who will Stevens Institute of Technology for TV and Film Composition.
  • Diana Sanchez, Egg Harbor Township H.S., who will attend Stockton University for Nursing.

The committee said it also gave a special commendation of a $500 scholarship to Jondel Gonzalez, of Egg Harbor Township H.S., who will attend Stockton University to study Marine Biology.

Highlighting the great culture and leadership in South Jersey’s Hispanic community.

They were recognized during an award ceremony at Vagabond Bar and Grill in Egg Harbor Township. Nayi Lorick, the committee chair for the HAAC scholarships said at the July group meeting that she was pleased with the strong field of candidates applying for the scholarships this year. She said she believes the quality of the candidates will only get stronger in the future.

“This year’s selection was a very difficult one with many outstanding applicants,” the organization said. “The recipients demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, and leadership, through their extracurricular activities and exceptional essays.”
